A world of evocative and homemade flavours
Mallin Colorado Ecolodge offers this culinary program where you will have the chance to enjoy cooking in the big kitchen and learn from the lodge owner chef. You will visit the greenhouse of the lodge with vegetables and aromatic herbs that grow in this area.
You will learn how to prepare home-made bread, fine pastas and the typical barbecued lamb in the “quincho” of the lodge. Moreover you will learn how to prepare a fine herbs Patagonian salmon and delicious deserts of Chilean Colonial times. The program includes accommodations, transfer from and to Balmaceda, all meals, outdoor excursions with a bilingual guide, culinary classes with the owner of the lodge and a CD with receipts for free.
From the beginning, Mallin Colorado has been characterized by the excellent food it offers its visitors, in which the owner of the house puts all of her love and good taste. She prepares homemade and traditional dishes with fresh vegetables from their garden and healthy meats of the region. The food is cooked over a wood fire in clay pots, taking fresh vegetables from the garden and above all, with lots of love and care.
Itinerary:
Day 1: Balmaceda - Lago General Carrera
After arrival at the airport of Balmaceda we start to drive south on the Carretera Austral, the unpaved extension of the Panamerican Highway. We cross rivers, lakes, and valleys and are surrounded by mountains and virgin forests. Our destination is General Carrera Lake, one of the world’s greatest reserves of clean fresh water. Day 2: Greenhouse tour in Mallin Colorado and horseback riding
A morning trekking or horseback riding tour through the surrounding forest of Coigues, Ñirres and Lengas include wonderful views over the lake General Carrera. Lunch and visit to the greenhouse of the lodge to take vegetable and herbs accompanied by the housewife. Today we will learn about the famous “morille” that grows in the native forests of Mallin Colorado. Morille is a wild champignon considered worldwide a “delicatessen”. We will prepare the “morille soup”. Before dinner, you are invited to learn how to prepare “pisco sour” in Mallin Colorado. Dinner and lodging.
Day 3: River Baker – Home-baked bread
After breakfast, we drive south to get to know famous river Baker and its Confluence with river Neff, visiting the small enchanting village of Puerto Bertrand, where lake Bertrand give birth to river Baker. Back in Mallin Colorado you are invited to prepare the last details for lunch. In the afternoon, you will learn how to prepare and bake different kinds of home bread, in the stove oven. Day 4: Marble caves and fine herbs Patagonian salmon
After breakfast we drive north to take a boat trip through the Puerto Tranquilo area of Lake General Carrera, where you can enjoy the famous rock formations of the Marble Cathedral on the calypso waters of the lake. The trip continues 50 km to the Bahia Exploradores, a narrow valley with huge mountains and diverse glaciers. Later you will walk another 20 minutes towards the extraordinary Explorers Glacier, which descends directly from San Valentine Hill (which, at 4000 meters above sea level, is the highest mountain in Patagonia). This is also a spectacular opportunity to take photos and film. You will have lunch in the glacier area. Back in the lodge, we will learn how to prepare fine herbs Patagonian salmon in the stove oven, which later we will serve for dinner in the club house of the lodge.
Day 5: Lake Bertrand and desserts evening
After breakfast we will have a boat excursion on lake Bertrand and lake Plomo, where we will have lunch. After the boat tour, we drive back to the lodge to have a longer antique desserts class in the kitchen of the lodge. There you will learn how to prepare old receipts of the lodge owner. Day 6: Day at leisure with barbecued Patagonian lamb
After breakfast we have a leisure day in Mallin Colorado. Today you can also take the optional excursions. Lunch in the club house and at 17.00 beginning of the preparation of barbecued lamb during 5 hours until it is ready to eat. Dinner in the typical “quincho” of the lodge. Day 7: Transfer to Balmaceda
After our breakfast we drive to the airport of Balmaceda to board your connecting flight.
